Cold

“I know your works: you are neither cold nor hot. Would that you were either cold or hot! So, because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth."
(Revelation 3:15, 16) ESV

I don't know about the rest of you, but there have been times in my life when I feel like I'm growing cold towards God.

Maybe He just feels distant to you. Or maybe your relationship is hindered because of sin in your life.

But you don't want to stay where you are spiritually. You know your love has grown cold and you want to let it blaze once again. What if you dared to get out of this rut, stop doing what's so pathetically easy, and asked God to reignite the passion within your heart that you once knew. And what if God got through?

This is the message behind this song, written from the viewpoint of someone who is fully aware where they are spiritually and yet refuses to be satisfied with their despicable complacency.

"Cold"

Never let me be comfortable as I slowly freeze
My icy life is killing me, I'm on my knees
I don't want to be satisfied with the way I've been
Help me shake off the biting chill of sin

Don't let me go cold on You
Thaw my heart till You somehow get through
Don't let me go cold on You
And if I do, reignite my love, Lord, for You

Show me how lost I am and how cold I've grown
I've been so blind in this blizzard, I haven't even known
This world's empty entertainments have wasted me to the core
My senses are dulled; and I can't see You anymore

Don't let me go cold on You
Thaw my heart till You somehow get through
Don't let me go cold on You
And if I do, reignite my love, Lord, for You

Don't ever let me be falsely and foolishly content
When, because of my sin, I need to humbly repent
I wanna be drenched with an overwhelming desire
To help save those who are sinking in the mire

Pierce through my frozen heart with Your love and grace
Till the coldness has fled, and there's not a single trace

Don't let me go cold on You
Thaw my heart till You somehow get through
Don't let me go cold on You
And if I do, reignite my love, Lord, for You

And if I do, reignite my love, Lord, for You

Normally I link any song I share to a youtube version so that you can listen to it, and I also usually tell you the author of the song, but today I'm not going to do either of those things... yet. Although your welcome to guess who wrote it!

Let's talk some more about the song's message first. Because I love songs (as I'm sure you couldn't have guessed)! And it's awesome to explore exactly what they mean.

Maybe you don't feel that you are cold toward God, but can you honestly say that you're "on fire" for him? Are you sure there aren't any areas of your life that you haven't yet fully surrendered to Him? What happens is that we become content with our lives and start believing that we're doing fine when we're not.

Jesus never said, "Become a Christian, get baptized, and go to church once in a while--that's all I ask." No. He said, "If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me." (Matthew 16:24) ESV

Do you daily surrender your life to God's control, denying yourself and your plans, letting Him guide you? Are you truly following in God's footsteps, or are you secretly harboring some sin that is taking control of you? Many Christians don't realize how devastating sin can be. We excuse ourselves by saying, "I'm human--nobody's perfect." This is true, yet examining our lives for sin is vital for spiritual growth. We just don't take the time to think how utterly repulsive, disgusting, and filthy our sins are to our holy God.

Sin blocks out the Holy Spirit's voice. Sin trashes the reputation of our Savior and causes Him to feel pain. Sin sickens the heart of our Heavenly Father. And, trust me, sin not only destroy's your relationship with God and those around you, but it also begins destroying you. Literally.

What might you be embracing in your life that might be getting in the way of God? Entertainment? Food? Money? Computer? Gossip? Music? Work? Other people? Don't just leave things the way they are!

Let each one of us at the least pray for God to show us our sins and not ever let us be satisfied with ourselves when we're breaking the heart of the One Who died for us. We don't have to wallow in defeat. Victory comes through Jesus Christ alone!

Now, about the song author, who was it? If you guessed Chris Tomlin, you were absolutely... wrong! It was... not Steven Curtis Chapman, or Bethany Dillon, or Mark Hall. Who's left? Robert Pierre? nope.

The author is a teenage guy who's a senior in high school, happens to be a homeschooler, and isn't extremely talkative, but loves singing. His name?

Josiah Keener

Hmmm... that's funny, he has my name. Oh well. At least it's a cool name.

I'll give you an unaccompanied version of the song now to listen to (because I don't have accompaniment worked out yet). I would just request that you please post a comment after listening! :-) And you're welcome to critique it if you think of any improvements.

This isn't a critique of my voice--unless, of course, you like it! :) I'm mainly interested in what you think of the song, tune, etc... Don't be afraid to offer suggestions and be honest. If you really think it's amazing, your allowed to tell me that, not to boost my ego or anything, but because I do need encouragement every now and again. If you don't like it, don't beat around the bush--just tell me--I'm open to advice. If you'd rather not post a comment, you can always go to my profile page, find my e-mail address under "contact me," and shoot me an e-mail. Anyway, here it is!

Well, there you go. I hope you enjoyed! Now, give your input. And thank you in advance!
